This position will lead manufacturing plant tooling projects and standardization processes.  The Engineer will be responsible for design, develop, install, and maintaining assembly weld tooling for the entire plant.  The Engineer will utilize CAD to design weld tooling that optimizes our capital and footprint utilization.  Projects will range from design from part print weld fixturing to adapting already built fixtures to current weld machines.

  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles to design tooling for bending, trimming, and assembly machines.
  • Evaluate and interpret specifications and blueprints for projects.

 

  • Create drawings and blueprints for desired tool for internal or external tool build.

 

  • Defines tooling touch points (3-2-1’s) based on the manufacturing drawings GD&T structure and tolerancing utilizing the predefined manufacturing process.

 

  • Leads functional tooling design reviews between the selected tooling supplier and the plant manufacturing team.

 

  • Recommend materials for tool production based on durability, cost, and function.

 

  • Analyze and improve upon current tooling methods to increase efficiency and reduce cost.

 

  • Develops, promotes, and monitors the utilization of standard process, equipment, tooling and product.

 

  • Coordinate with tool manufacturers and vendors for tool procurement.

 

  • Continuous improvement and product initiatives to achieve productivity initiatives including design to cost and lean manufacturing.

 

  • Utilizes technical expertise to implement / oversee the implementation of cost reduction ideas.

 

  • Supports or manages (as assigned) the technical direction & coordination for tooling installations & start-ups.

 

  • Other duties as assigned.   

 

Education / Experience / Skills:

 

Education / Experience:

 

  • Associate degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering Technologies or relevant experience.
  • 3-5 years of related tool design experience.
  • Experience working with equipment and tooling suppliers.  Preparation of SOW’s, RFQ’s, conducting, runoffs, and installation.
  • Experience using CAD and computer-based engineering tools (such as SolidWorks)
  • Hands on technical knowledge of exhaust after-treatment systems, mufflers and pipe bending is a plus.

 

 

Skills:

 

  • Knowledge and practical application of GD&T.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and Design for Manufacturability.
  • Proficiency with PC applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and flow-charting software.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems and opportunities, develop plans and successfully implement solutions.
  • Manufacturing process development, fixture design, tooling / gage design, and equipment design
  • Self-motivated, ability to effectively prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations, ability to establish and maintain budgets, and project management skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of welding and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to make effective presentations to a wide variety of audiences including senior managers, customers and employee groups

Travel:

  • Ability to travel in support of job function (plants, customers, suppliers, etc.)

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance and to stoop kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Vision abilities required include close vision.
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
