Position Summary

The Weld & Automation Specialist is responsible for supporting automated welding systems, robotic equipment, and associated automation within the manufacturing environment. This role focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, and improving robotic welding cells to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient production.

 

The position works cross-functionally with Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and Production to support equipment uptime, continuous improvement initiatives, and process optimization. This role also supports new equipment launches, robotic program updates, and weld process improvements to maintain product quality and production performance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Robotics & Automation Support

  • Program, troubleshoot, and maintain robotic welding systems
  • Perform robot program adjustments to support new product launches, engineering changes, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Maintain and optimize robotic welding parameters, tooling, fixtures, and automation systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve robot faults, automation failures, and communication issues.

 

Welding Process Support

  • Support development and optimization of robotic welding processes including MIG, resistance, or other automated welding applications.
  • Assist with weld quality improvements, defect reduction, and process capability improvements.
  • Work with Quality and Engineering teams to troubleshoot weld defects, scrap, and rework issues.

 

Equipment Troubleshooting & Maintenance

  • Troubleshoot robotic cells, PLC systems, sensors, servo systems, and automation controls.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance activities on robotic weld cells and automated equipment.
  • Maintain proper documentation for robot programs, backups, and system configurations.

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve robot cycle time, reliability, and process efficiency.
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support implementation of automation upgrades, tooling improvements, and equipment modifications.

Launch & Engineering Support

  • Assist with installation, commissioning, and startup of new robotic equipment or automation systems.

 

  • Support process validation, runoffs, and production trials.
  • Work with Engineering teams on process development, equipment upgrades, and automation projects.

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure robotic equipment and automation systems comply with safety standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and safe operation practices for automated systems.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate’s degree or technical certification in Robotics, Automation, Mechatronics, Welding Technology, or Industrial Maintenance preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.

 

Experience

  • 3+ years experience working with robotic welding systems or industrial automation in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with robot programming and troubleshooting preferred.

 

Technical Skills

  • Experience with industrial robotic systems.
  • Knowledge of automated welding processes and weld parameters.
  • Familiarity with PLC systems, automation controls, sensors, and industrial electrical systems.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, weld specifications, and mechanical drawings.

 

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with production, maintenance, and engineering teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and process discipline.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Demonstrate strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to diagnose robotic, automation, and welding process issues.
  • Interpret and apply technical documentation, including electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and robot programming instructions.
  • Maintain high attention to detail while working with precision automation equipment.
  • Effectively prioritize multiple tasks and respond quickly to production equipment issues.
  • Communicate clearly with engineering, maintenance, and production teams to resolve technical problems.
  • Maintain situational awareness while working around automated machinery and robotic equipment.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 40–50 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to work around robotic cells, automation equipment, and welding stations.
  • Ability to climb ladders or access elevated equipment when required.
  • Ability to work in confined or restricted spaces during troubleshooting or maintenance.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm movements when using tools or programming equipment.
  • Must be able to visually inspect weld quality and equipment indicators.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, welding helmet, gloves, hearing protection, and protective clothing.
