Plant Controller Job Overview

As a plant controller, you will oversee the daily accounting activities required to maintain the company's general ledger and produce accurate financial statements. You will also ensure the timely issuance of accounts payable checks, employee expense reports, and payroll. Your duties will also include assisting with periodic inventory counts, reconciling inventory and cost of goods sold on the general ledger, and resolving inventory discrepancies.

Responsibilities of a Plant Controller

  • Prepare monthly financial reports for the Plant Manager, Plant HR Manager and Plant Operations Manager
  • Review and analyze expenses for the plant and makes recommendations for cost improvements
  • Assist with the annual budgeting process
  • Maintain a cost accounting system to track production costs and manufacturing variances
  • Oversee general ledger accounting, including maintaining fixed asset records
  • Manage banking and cash flow activities
  • Ensure that internal controls are in place to safeguard financial assets
  • Comply with government requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for internal stakeholders
  • Analyze variances between actual versus budgeted expenses
  • Manage external audit processes

Plant Controller Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
  • 5-7 years of experience in a financial leadership role
  • Strong ability to interpret and explain financial data to non-financial staff members
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and database management
  • Experience with accounting software
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as lead others

Skills

The ideal candidate for this position has excellent organizational skills, can work well under pressure, has strong attention to detail, is accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment and meeting tight deadlines, and has extensive experience with Microsoft Excel. The ability to prepare clear financial statements and communicate that information with non-accountants is also required. Familiarity with QuickBooks and Sage 100 accounting software is preferred but not required.
