ABOUT THE ROLE

Product Manager in the context of a Ring Manufacturing Facility would need a comprehensive skill set to ensure that production operations run smoothly, efficiently, and safely. Below is a breakdown of the critical skills for this position

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In consultation with Value Stream Manager, he will be responsible to decide & drive the operation strategies, establish Operational Objectives & workplans for Ring Plant.
  • This position will be responsible for the operational results of Ring plant with a head count of 500+ employees,
  • Reporting on to the Production Manager will be the Operations Managers of the main plant Machine Shop and Foundry, function heads of Quality, PPC, Maintenance & EHS.
  • The Product Manager will provide operational expertise and guide the operations team as well as work closely with the HR department to drive people strategy including but not limited to hiring, people development, employee engagement etc.,
  • The position would also support HR in maintaining healthy relations with the Union and provide inputs during CLA negotiations,
  • The role entails visits to customer locations and other plants as required,
  • The position is expected to have proficiency in driving the plant P&L, Safety Culture, Inventory, Optimization, Best in Class Mindset for Continual Improvement, Basic understanding of Regulatory compliances, Global bench marking/teach transfers, JIT production, Quality standards & global maturity models, cost reductions & avoidance

 

 JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience. 
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience in a manufacturing setting.  

 

Technical Expertise:

  • Manufacturing Process Knowledge: Understanding Ring manufacturing processes, including casting, machining, and finishing. Familiarity with the use of  machines and other precision equipment.
  • Quality Control & Assurance: Knowledge of quality standards (such as ISO 9001, TS 16949) and the ability to implement quality control systems for product consistency and defect reduction.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Expertise in diagnosing and solving mechanical and operational problems in production lines, as well as implementing preventive maintenance strategies.
  • Automation & Robotics: Familiarity with automated systems used in Ring production, including robotic arms, conveyor systems, and automated inspection systems.

 

Leadership & People Management:

  • Team Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team of engineers, machine operators, and technicians. Strong interpersonal skills to ensure effective communication and coordination among departments.
  • Conflict Resolution: Capable of addressing and resolving conflicts within the workforce, ensuring that morale remains high and productivity is not affected.
  • Training & Development: Implementing training programs for new employees and upskilling current staff to keep up with new technologies and best practices in Ring production.
  • Performance Management: Setting clear goals, evaluating performance, and providing feedback to improve individual and team output.

 

Operational Management

  • Production Scheduling: Planning and organizing production runs, managing work shifts, and ensuring production targets are met while maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.
  • Inventory Management: Overseeing the management of raw materials, semi-finished goods, and finished products to optimize production flow and reduce costs.
  • Resource Allocation: Ensuring that both human and material resources are used effectively, optimizing labor costs and raw material usage while minimizing waste.

 

Financial Management 

  • Cost Control & Budgeting: Managing production costs, tracking expenses, and identifying areas for cost savings without compromising product quality or safety.
  • Capital Expenditures: Making decisions on investment in new equipment or technology upgrades, including justifying the cost and evaluating the return on investment.
  • KPI Monitoring & Reporting: Monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) like yield rates, downtime, production speed, and cost per unit. Generating reports for upper management on production efficiency and financial health

 

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Health and Safety Standards: Ensuring compliance with all workplace safety regulations and protocols to protect employees, particularly in environments with heavy machinery and high-risk processes.
  • Environmental Regulations: Overseeing the facility’s compliance with environmental standards related to waste disposal, emissions, and sustainability practices.
  • Risk Management: Identifying potential risks in production processes and implementing measures to mitigate those risks, including worker safety, machine breakdowns, and supply chain disruptions

 

Supply Chain & Logistics :

  • Supplier Relationship Management: Establishing strong relationships with suppliers of raw materials like aluminum, steel, or cast iron. Ensuring timely delivery of materials to avoid production delays.
  • Logistics Coordination: Managing the movement of materials into the plant and finished products out to customers. This includes warehousing, distribution, and transportation logistics.
  • Just-In-Time (JIT) Manufacturing: Implementing lean manufacturing principles, including JIT inventory systems, to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and keep costs down.

 

Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing:

  • Lean Manufacturing: Familiarity with lean principles like Kaizen, Six Sigma, or 5S to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance quality.
  • Process Optimization: Continuously reviewing and refining production processes for better efficiency, lower cost, and improved quality.
  • Data Analysis & Problem Solving: Using data analytics to identify bottlenecks, improve workflows, and solve production issues proactively.

 

Communication & Reporting:

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Effective communication with R&D, engineering, sales, and senior management to align production goals with organizational objectives.
  • Reporting to Stakeholders: Providing regular updates on production performance, challenges, and improvements to senior leadership, stakeholders, or customers.
  • Customer Engagement: Addressing customer requirements and feedback, ensuring that product specifications and delivery timelines are met.

 

Adaptability & Innovation:

  • Technological Adaptation: Staying current with advancements in manufacturing technology, such as additive manufacturing, AI-driven automation, or advanced material science, that could improve production efficiency.
  • Innovation in Product Development: Collaborating with R&D teams to integrate new Ring designs or materials that may improve engine performance or reduce emissions.

  • Long-term Planning: Developing strategies for facility expansion, new product lines, and international market entry.
  • Market Awareness: Understanding the dynamics of the automotive, aerospace, and other industries that rely on Ring components and adjusting production strategies accordingly
