Job Title: Tool and Die Maker

Department: Tool and Die
Reports To: Tool Room Supervisor
Location: Blacksburg, VA


Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Tool and Die Maker to build, repair, and maintain tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures used in our manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have experience with precision machining, blueprint reading, and troubleshooting complex tooling used in high-volume production environments, such as automotive stamping, forming, or injection molding.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Fabricate, repair, and maintain a variety of precision tools, dies, molds, and fixtures to support production operations.

Read and interpret blueprints, CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.

Operate a variety of machine tools including lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, and EDM machines.

Set up and adjust tool dimensions, tolerances, and fits to exacting specifications.

Inspect finished tools and dies for proper function using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges).

Troubleshoot and resolve tooling issues affecting production performance or part quality.

Perform preventive maintenance on existing tools and dies to extend tool life and reduce downtime.

Collaborate with engineering and production teams to support new product launches and continuous improvement initiatives.

Maintain accurate records of tooling maintenance, revisions, and modifications.

Follow all safety policies and ensure tooling work adheres to quality standards and tolerances.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required; completion of a Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship or trade school preferred.

3–5 years of experience in tool and die making within a manufacturing environment (automotive preferred).

Strong knowledge of machining processes, tooling design, materials, and heat treatment.

Proficient in the use of manual and CNC machine tools.

Ability to interpret complex blueprints and engineering drawings.

Skilled in the use of precision measuring instruments.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.

Good communication and collaboration abilities.

Must be able to work shift, weekends, and overtime as needed.

 

Physical Requirements:

Stand, walk, bend, and lift throughout the shift.

Lift and handle objects up to 50 lbs.

Work in a manufacturing environment, sometimes exposed to noise, heat, or moving machinery.
